Joes Comeback Falls Short in 8-6 Defeat

Joes season ends in an 8-6 defeat in game three

After a long and grueling season, it all came down to this: one final game under the lights on Saturday night. With the series tied 1-1, the GLSCL Championship came down to a winner-take-all clash between the league’s two best teams — the Lima Locos and the Hamilton Joes.

This time, it was Lima who struck first. In the opening inning, back-to-back doubles and a sacrifice fly gave the Locos an early two-run lead. On the mound, Lima starter Johnathon Allen was dominant. Allen tossed six shutout innings, allowing just six hits and no runs as he kept the Joes offense in check.

Lima kept the pressure on in the fourth. Once again, back-to-back doubles did damage, and an RBI single tacked on a second run in the frame, stretching the lead to 4-0. Things didn’t get any easier in the fifth. A single, an error by the catcher, and a sacrifice fly extended the Locos' lead to 5-0.

Heading into the seventh, hope was fading for Hamilton — until a Lima pitching change gave them a spark. Three straight hit batters loaded the bases with one out, and Brett Denby beat out a potential double play to bring in the Joes’ first run. After a walk to Christopher Roa, Jackson Wang was hit by a pitch, bringing in another run and cutting the deficit to three.

But the momentum didn’t last. In the bottom of the seventh, a pair of walks and wild pitches quickly put runners in scoring position. A double and a single followed, allowing three more runs to cross the plate and pushing Lima’s lead to 8-2 — a seemingly insurmountable gap.

Still, the Joes weren’t finished. In the eighth, walks from Aidyn Coffey and Mark Nowak set the stage, and one of the Joes’ top bats delivered: Jaxson Christ ripped a two-run double to the gap, cutting the lead to four.

Needing four runs in the ninth to stay alive, Hamilton gave it one last push. Roa led off with a walk, and after a flyout, Travis Yankovich came through with one of his biggest swings of the summer — an RBI triple to right that sparked real hope. Nowak followed with a grounder that forced an error at third, allowing another run to score and making it 8-6. But that’s where the rally ended. Two strikeouts later, the Locos stormed the field as 2025 GLSCL Champions.

While it didn’t end the way they’d hoped, the 2025 season was still a memorable one for the Hamilton Joes. After a rough and inconsistent start, the team improved steadily as the summer wore on. Even after losing several key contributors along the way, they developed into one of the league’s toughest outs — and came just a few swings away from a title.

On behalf of the Hamilton Joes, thank you to all the coaches, players, fans, interns, staff, and everyone else who made the 2025 season possible. We can’t wait to get back to work in 2026 — and make another run at the trophy.

Joes Force Game Three with Statement Win on the Road

Joes take game two on the road 7-3

With their season on the line after a heartbreaking, late-inning loss to the Lima Locos in Game One, the Hamilton Joes bounced back in a big way on Friday night. Facing elimination, they hit the road and delivered a commanding 7–3 win to even the championship series and set up a decisive Game Three.

The Joes wasted no time returning to their signature fast starts. Jaxson Christ opened the game with a leadoff double and was promptly driven in by Brett Denby’s RBI single. In the second, Marc Iozzo sparked more offense with a single and moved to second on a fielder’s choice. Mark Rutherford followed with an RBI single to extend the lead to 2–0.

Lima responded in the bottom half of the inning in bizarre fashion. After a double and a hit batter, two consecutive balks allowed both runners to score—an unusual sequence that tied the game at 2–2. Still, starter Brendan Mullin was rock solid when it mattered most. In a must-win situation, Mullin pitched over six innings, allowing just two hits and two runs in a strong outing.

The turning point came in the fourth inning. Iozzo, who finished the night 3-for-5, led off with a single. After back-to-back walks loaded the bases with two outs, Christopher Roa came through in the clutch with a two-run single to left. Jackson Wang followed with a two-RBI double, breaking the game open and giving the Joes a 6–2 lead.

From there, Hamilton took control. In the eighth, a hit batter and walk set the stage for Rutherford to score on a wild pitch, padding the lead to 7–2.

Not that the Joes needed much more. Mullin’s dominance was followed by lights-out bullpen work from Dylan Kaiser and Matty Helms. Despite giving up a run in the eighth, Helms escaped trouble and closed the door with a six-out save to secure the 7–3 victory.

This was a defining win for the Joes. With their backs against the wall, on the road, and facing elimination in the final series, they delivered — on the mound, in the field, and at the plate. While the pitching was stellar, the Joes also played a clean game defensively with zero errors and racked up ten hits, marking a complete team effort that pushes this championship series to one final game for all the marbles.

Game Three is set for Saturday, August 2 at Simmons Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m., with the championship on the line.

Joes Drop Game One Heartbreaker, Face Elimination on the Road

Joes drop game one 4-1 in a nailbiter

After a dominant sweep of the Xenia Scouts, the Hamilton Joes advanced to the GLSCL Championship Series and now find themselves battling the Lima Locos for the title. As the lower seed, Hamilton would be on the road for games two and three—but first, they had a chance to make a statement in Game One at home at Foundation Field.

          Defense was the story early.

Dale Ellis got the start for Hamilton and breezed through two quick, scoreless innings before trouble brewed in the third. A leadoff double off the left field wall, followed by two infield hits, loaded the bases with nobody out for Lima. But the Joes’ defense delivered. A clutch 6-4-3 double play brought home a run but recorded two key outs. Then, with another run threatening to score, center fielder Mark Nowak made a spectacular diving catch to end the inning and keep it 1-0.

Hamilton responded in the bottom half. A single from Aidyn Coffey, followed by a walk and hit batter, loaded the bases with two outs for their go-to hitter, Jackson Wang. Wang connected on a hard-hit ball that looked destined to bring in runs, but Locos shortstop Marwynn Matthews made a leaping grab to rob him and end the threat.

The defensive highlight reel continued in the fourth. After a leadoff single for Lima, Coffey made a slick pick on a sharp grounder to third, starting a smooth 5-4-3 double play to erase the runner and end the frame.

But as the game went on, the story became the pitching. Lima starter Brady Koester was dominant, spinning six shutout innings with just two hits and seven strikeouts. Ellis kept Hamilton within striking distance, tossing five innings of one-run ball despite working around six hits and a few jams.

The Joes finally broke through in the bottom of the seventh. After a pitching change, Coffey walked, Nowak reached on catcher’s interference, and Jaxson Christ singled to load the bases with no outs. Brett Denby lifted a deep fly to left that stayed in the park but was deep enough for a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1-1. With two runners still on, Christopher Roa roped a single to right, and Nowak was waved home—but was tagged out at the plate. Frustrated, he was ejected after exchanging words with the umpire. A flyout ended the inning with the score still tied.

          That missed opportunity proved costly.

Lima capitalized in the top of the eighth, stringing together a single, four walks, a passed ball, and a wild pitch to plate three backbreaking runs. The Joes were suddenly trailing 4-1 with just six outs to work with.

Hamilton made one last push in the ninth. Two leadoff walks gave them life, but a strikeout, groundout, and another strikeout sealed the deal for Lima, who took Game One on the road and now sit one win away from a league title.

It’s a gut-wrenching loss for the Joes. With only one home game in the series, this was their best shot to control the series. Now, they’ll need to win back-to-back games on the road in Lima to keep their championship hopes alive.

Game Two is set for 7:05 PM Friday night at Simmons Field.
