Joes Outlast Settlers 4-2, Keep Pace in GLSCL South Division

June 23, Foundation Field- Hamilton, OH
The Joes came into the game with a 10-6 record, putting them in second place in the division while the Settlers had a 6-10 record entering the game. The Joes came into the game with a 2-0 series lead on the Settlers this season.
The best chance for either team early on came in the bottom of the second when the Joes’ Bryson Shelton (Trevecca Nazarene) hit a single, then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch, but was then stranded on third. The Joes started the scoring in the bottom of the third after back to back singles by AJ Compton (Elmhurst) and Ben Spiztnagel (North Carolina Greensboro). A sacrifice fly from Jackson Boyce (Indiana Purdue Fort Wayne) brought home Compton for the game’s first run.
The bats came alive for the Joes in the bottom of the fifth as they were finally able to string together a few hits. Jackson Boyce doubled, scoring two runs and Dane Tofteland (Indiana State) hit a laser down the third base line for a double, scoring another run for the Joes making it 4-0.
The Settlers got a few runs back in the top of the seventh after Luke Phillips hit a hard ground ball down the third base line knocking in a run. After allowing his first run, which was unearned, Carson Lester (Middle Tennessee State) was taken out after 6 and 2/3, scaterring 5 hits and striking out 2. The Settlers scored one more run in the seventh on a Dane Tofteland throwing error.
The rest of the game went scoreless, with Wes Rickenberg (Bowling Green State) coming in to get the save in the bottom of the ninth and retired the final three batters of the game.
The attendance was just a tad under 600, with 591 people coming out on a gorgeous June evening to watch the Joes win 4-2.
The Joes and the Settlers play again Friday night at 7:05 PM at Foundation Field
